Gene and Miranda Philbin, husband and wife team started Peculiar Culinary Company in August of 2012 with the goal of supporting the local community by hosting supper club events geared towards supporting local business, art and music. This started as a passion project that quickly evolved into so much more!
The mission and vision of Peculiar Culinary Company is to take what is local and seasonal to create something a little bit different. We love to push the envelope and get people to try new things. Most importantly everything is made from scratch. We like to put our Peculiar twist on everything that we do.
We started catering events in late 2012 from company luncheons to weddings and other off premise events! In early 2014 we opened our Event Space, located in Hughestown, PA, that has seating for up to 100 guests.
Chef Gene appeared as a contestant on The Food Network’s ‘Guys Grocery Games’ hosted by Guy Fieri. Gene won the holiday episode ‘Dashing Through the Isles’!
Both Miranda and Gene were featured on CNBC’s ‘Restaurant Startup’ episode ‘Small Markets, Big Dreams’ in the spring. We did not advance or get an investment, but we had a great experience and we still own 100% of our company!
We launched our Kickstarter Campaign in June 2015 and 30 days later we were successfully funded, which was a huge help in acquiring our food truck. In late 2015, we purchased and built our food truck and 2016 we hit the road from the Scranton and Pocono areas up to the Lehigh Valley for various festivals, brewery and winery events.
We have been honored over the years with awards from area publications such as the570.com, Northeast Business Journal and the Times Leader in categories such as ‘Best Chef’, “Best Caterer,” and ’Best Food Truck’! We couldn’t do any of this without our amazing ‘Peculiar Family’ and our ‘Peculiar Peeps’, as we like to call our customers. We appreciate all of your support!
Gene is a 2004 graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Culinary Arts & Hotel Restaurant Management, with experience ranging from food sales to chef work in corporate and fine and casual dining establishments.
Miranda is a 2006 graduate of Wilkes University in Business Administration and Marketing, with experience in human resources, business management, hospitality and event planning.
We support community efforts, especially those related to hunger and the community. We hosted The Peculiar Music Festival for area fundraising efforts from local parks to food banks. We work with local farmers and other businesses to utilize as many local ingredients as possible into our cooking.
